Frank Malaba: A Multifaceted Force in the Performing Arts
Frank Malaba's journey in the performing arts has been marked by diverse cultural experiences, a passion for storytelling, and a commitment to inspiring future generations of artists.
Frank Malaba’s journey into the performing arts began in a childhood marked by diverse cultural experiences. Born and raised across Zimbabwe and Botswana, Frank’s passion for storytelling was ignited during visits to his grandmother’s remote village in Lupane, Zimbabwe. These visits were filled with tales and folklore that left a lasting impression on him. His grandmother’s incredible storytelling abilities planted the seeds of a lifelong love for performance and narrative.
Growing up, Frank realized his calling at the tender age of eight and had the unwavering support of his family, who were scattered across the diaspora. His first significant experience in the industry came at 16, when he performed in a play at the Bulawayo Theatre. This performance marked the beginning of a rich and varied career in acting, scriptwriting, producing, and directing.
Frank’s professional journey began in earnest at the Amakhosi Theatre in Bulawayo in 2001. His talent and dedication led him to further hone his craft at Media Village in Cape Town in 2007 and through intensive training in the Meisner Technique in 2017. Over the years, Frank has played pivotal roles in numerous film and television projects, including notable titles such as "Mental Matters", "InterSEXions", and "Scandal". His theatre credits are equally impressive, with standout performances in productions like "Stories of My Bones", "The Art of Facing Fear", and "No Further Questions", where he portrayed a range of characters, including the iconic Robert Mugabe.
Beyond traditional acting roles, Frank has appeared in commercials for international brands like Sportsman’s Warehouse, Ritz, and Famous Footwear. He has also made a significant impact in radio, producing and presenting shows such as Business & Arts South Africa and Outspoken, the latter being an LGBTQIA+ affirming program. His participation in festivals, including Mindelact 2021, showcases his versatility and dedication to the arts.
In addition to his work in performing arts, Frank is an accomplished artist in photography and prosetry - a unique blend of prose and poetry. His written works often complement his photographic pieces, adding depth and context to his visual artistry. This harmonious fusion of visual and written artistry encapsulates his creative vision and enriches his storytelling.
Frank’s personal style is a laid-back, semi-formal Afro-modern fusion. While he does not follow specific fashion designers or influencers, his unique aesthetic reflects his dynamic personality. He enjoys playing a variety of roles, particularly in drama, thriller, and comic genres. His favourite project to date has been playing Tawanda in "InterSEXions", a role that allowed him to explore complex emotional dynamics.
Looking ahead, Frank aspires to grow into a more successful and grounded artist who helps future generations develop and uphold a respected art form and industry. He dreams of performing in multilingual international projects and is open to any suitable role, believing that there are no small parts, only small actors.
Outside of his career, Frank enjoys hiking, attending concerts, and people-watching. He is deeply passionate about LGBTQIA+ advocacy, issues affecting unhoused people, and mental health. Despite his love for cooking and growing things, he admits a strong dislike for washing dishes.
A fun fact about Frank is his passion for culinary arts and if given the chance, he would love to have dinner with Robin Williams, Simon Nkoli, and Viola Davis. Each of these figures represents a different aspect of his inspiration—from the empathy and masterful acting of Williams, to Nkoli’s pioneering LGBTQIA+ advocacy, and Davis’s resilience and excellence in the craft.
To those aspiring to enter the modelling, acting, or entertainment industry, Frank advises embracing their uniqueness. "Your job is to be as unlike any other person as you possibly can be. Therein lies your strength," he says.
Frank Malaba’s career is a testament to his versatility, passion, and commitment to the arts. Whether through his powerful performances on stage and screen, his evocative photography and prosetry, or his impactful radio shows, Frank continues to inspire and connect with growing audiences.
